What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a traditional martial arts that originates from Korea, which focuses upon one’s defense with their fists and strong effective kicks with feet. It is also an official Olympic sport and the national sport of South Korea.

When literally translated from Korean, tae means “to strike or break with foot”; kwon means “to strike or break with fists”; and do means “art” or “way.” Hence, taekwondo translates to “the art of kicking and punching” or “the way of the foot and fist.”

Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art that emphasizes discipline, respect, and personal growth; and is well known for its emphasis on rapid and powerful kicks.
